The Smart Government Forum (SGF), owned and operated by Smartex Limited as part of the UK Smart Card Club, specialises in providing the UK public sector and its related supplier comunity with a range of member services relating to the use of smart cards across the entire spectrum of applications for this sector. Governments and their departments are generally regarded to represent the largest marketplace for this technology, not only in the UK but around the world. Although many of these applications could reside in a single smart card, most Governments are spending a huge amount of their taxpayers’ money in developing and deploying expensive, single-function cards. For citizens this is leading to even more confusion and to pockets and purses bulging with plastic. Alongside these many fragmented initiatives, smart technology itself is advancing rapidly, with new features and possibilities appearing almost weekly. Near Field Communications technology is also likely to have a massive impact upon the way that people store their entitlements and transact their daily business.
